Double-Sided Fishing Magnets: Advantages, Disadvantages & Eyelet Configurations!

In recent years, magnet fishing has gained popularity among outdoor enthusiasts and treasure hunters. One essential tool for this activity is the fishing magnet, specifically the double-sided fishing magnet. In this blog, we will delve into the world of double-sided fishing magnets, exploring their advantages, disadvantages, eyelet configuration, and other relevant information.

Advantages of Double-Sided Fishing Magnets:

  1. Increased Magnetic Strength: Double-sided fishing magnets have magnets on both sides, resulting in enhanced magnetic strength. This design allows for a greater chance of attracting and retrieving objects from various depths in the water.

  2. Versatility: With magnets on both sides, these fishing magnets provide versatility in terms of their application. They can attract objects both when dragged along the bottom of a body of water and when thrown into the water and pulled back.

  3. Higher Retrieval Efficiency: Due to their dual-sided nature, double-sided fishing magnets increase the chances of grabbing onto metallic objects while minimizing the risk of them slipping away. This leads to higher retrieval efficiency during magnet fishing expeditions.

  4. Time-Saving: The stronger magnetic force of double-sided fishing magnets enables faster retrieval of objects, saving valuable time during the treasure hunting process.

Disadvantages of Double-Sided Fishing Magnets:

  1. Increased Weight: The presence of magnets on both sides makes double-sided fishing magnets heavier compared to their single-sided counterparts. This additional weight can make them more challenging to handle, especially when repeatedly throwing and retrieving them from the water.

  2. Higher Cost: Double-sided fishing magnets often come at a higher cost compared to single-sided magnets due to their design and increased magnetic strength. However, the investment can be worthwhile for avid magnet fishing enthusiasts.

Eyelet Configuration and Attachment
Double-sided fishing magnets typically feature a centrally positioned eyelet  and an eyelet on the side of the magnet.

Screw in the top eyelet if you are 'dropping and pulling' from a high place such as a pier or jetty!

Use the side eyelet if you plan on dragging the magnet. If you are throwing it out afar and dragging it along the bottom, the side eyelet will allow the magnet to slide over the bottom with less chance of getting snagged!
If using the side eyelet, make sure the top eyelet is not insert as this will limit one full side of the magnet underwater!

It is important to use a robust rope that can withstand the weight and stress exerted during magnet fishing. Opting for a high-quality, durable rope with sufficient strength is crucial to prevent accidents or equipment failure. Our ropes at this link here are specifically tested for use with fishing magnets!

Do I Thread lock the Eyelets?
Personally, I will thread lock the side eyelet of my double sided magnet. This is because it is the most versatile eyelet and we use this one 90% of the time. For the other 10% of the time, I will use a screwdriver to get some extra leverage to undo the side eyelet and inset the top eyelet with some thread lock!

Tips for Using Double-Sided Fishing Magnets:

  1. Choose the correct eyelet: The eyelet you decide to screw in and attach your rope will impact the performance of your magnet. The side eyelet is the most versatile as it will allow you to drop and raise the magnet and also drag the magnet along the bottom in your search for treasure!

  2. Safety First: Always exercise caution and prioritize safety when engaging in magnet fishing activities. Wear appropriate protective gear, such as gloves, and be mindful of your surroundings.

  3. Proper Cleaning and Maintenance: After each use, thoroughly clean your double-sided fishing magnet to remove debris and prevent rusting. Try to flush out the eyelet holes with fresh water. Store it in a dry place to maintain its longevity.

Double-sided fishing magnets offer significant advantages, such as increased magnetic strength, versatility, and higher retrieval efficiency. While they may be heavier and costlier than single-sided magnets, their benefits make them a valuable tool for magnet fishing enthusiasts. When using these magnets, ensuring proper attachment through the eyelet and following safety guidelines are essential for a successful and enjoyable magnet fishing experience. So, grab your double-sided fishing magnet, head out to the waters, and embark on an exciting journey of treasure hunting and discovery!
